Japanese whisky first revealed the extraordinary potential of Mizunara oak, a wood unique to Japan, giving rise to a distinctive character that has earned global recognition.

Today, Komaki Distillery is breaking new ground in whisky maturation with the world’s first whisky aged in casks crafted from Yakusugi, the ancient cedars of Yakushima Island.

Recognized as one of Japan’s first UNESCO World Natural Heritage Sites, Yakushima is home to Yakusugi cedars that have stood for more than a millenium. From these remarkable trees, special casks have been crafted to explore a new dimension of whisky maturation.

Unlike ordinary cedar, Yakusugi cedar develops a unique, rich fragrance over the course of centuries, as natural resins and aromatic compounds gradually accumulate within the wood.

While younger cedar can often possess a sharp, bitter, or acrid quality, Yakusugi, shaped through the passage of time, holds a deeper, more complex aroma.

The Yakusugi cask-aged whisky was harmonized with whisky matured in other types of barrels before being carefully refined in Komaki Distillery’s historic stone aging cellar―a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan― resulting in a truly unique single malt Japanese whisky.

“Musubi” refers to the ancient Japanese concept of the divine spirit of creation, the mystical force that gives life to and nurtures all things.
